20. Modular Corvair engines were built to bolt together in 4-, 8- and 10-cylinder configurations. One, a 10-cylinder front-wheel-drive configuration, was used in the development of the Olds Toronado.

I’d be interested to see just how modular they were - whether it was all the way to the crankcase or just modular jugs with a special cam and crank for each configuration.

Would certainly be telling as to just how dedicated they were to producing other variants.

Given the Porsche involvement in their design, it’s not surprising that bigger versions were considered, that’s the genius of the original 911 engine. The single heads per bank would make that a bit harder with the Corvair though.

Was it a boxer, or a 180° V10, though...

Jug - nickname term for a separable upper cylinder on an engine, particularly on an air-cooled and/or two-stroke.

Kinja'd!!!

Thus called because it’s jug-shaped, particularly if it’s got an integral head.

so why not call it a cylinder. people who call a cylinder a jug sound like they never passed the 5th grade.

Look here, dummy - you call it a “jug” because it doesn’t mean just “cylinder”, and “detachable single upper cylinder casting” is too long. It’s perfectly clear to nearly everybody who’s worked on an engine with one. You sound like somebody complaining that a brake or tire spoon isn’t really a a spoon.

hahaha everyone who calls a cylinder a jug is a redneck who has never read a repair manual...or anything really.

I don’t know what other points you were trying to make.

I’ve read repair manuals in English and German. I call it a jug. It’s a short, descriptive and effective name. “Cylinder” is vague for a separate cylinder engine. You can’t understand a simple illustrative point and I’m the one who can’t read? Eat me.
